Steps to Take Before a Value Meeting

When you’re ready to have a value meeting with your boss, you can follow certain steps to ensure that you have a productive conversation. Most organizations across the globe are not having this type of discussion, so it really helps to have a plan in place and all your ducks in a row.

  1. Identify the business performance drivers that are important to your organization. Brainstorm with a colleague, speak with a senior leader, or talk with someone in finance, sales, business development, or operations.
  2. Complete the value identification exercise. Identify value that you currently create or could create. You can also work with a colleague or friend to help you think through the exercise and challenge your thinking.
  3. Schedule a time with your boss in advance. Make it clear in your invitation that you are requesting the meeting to be solely focused on discussing business value.
  4. If appropriate, consider sending your value identification exercise in advance for your boss to preview.
