Your Boss’s Support and Joining an Association

Are you not feeling that you have the support of your boss when it comes to joining an association? In a previous post we discussed the importance of balancing work and industry events and being open with your boss. Here are a few more tips for getting your boss’s support and for getting her behind your decision to join an association.

  • Schedule time with your boss to discuss your interest in joining an industry association group. An ideal time for this conversation is during the budget planning cycle, so you can suggest that the costs of membership and meeting registration be included in the budget.
  • Work with a colleague to identify three to five benefits to the organization for joining an industry association. Include this information in your memo or during your conversation with your boss.
  • Explore if the industry association has “corporate” memberships that allow an organization to join, rather than just one person. As a result, you’re more likely to gain your boss’s support since other colleagues from your organization can benefit as well.
